Established in Blair in 1876, The Monday Afternoon Club (MAC) was an intellectual society

History 1000

Blair Public Library issued the following announcement on Mar. 3.

Established in Blair in 1876, The Monday Afternoon Club (MAC) was an intellectual society in which members met to discuss literature, history, and other topics. Though it was originally open to all, membership was limited to women shortly after its formation. The last image shows a list of the club's discussion topics dating back to its beginning. In 1908, with a yearly theme of "Topics of To-day," subjects included "Intelligent Eating,"

"Some of the World's Greatest Socialists, Past and Present," and "Child Labor in the Coal Mines." Due to declining membership, the MAC disbanded in 2009, 133 years after its formation. The Blair Public Library has a large collection of MAC materials from as far back as the early 1900s, including the yearly booklets, meeting minutes, and member records.
